Happy Friday!

Hi Everyone!

We enjoyed another hot week here in Room 105!

In Reading we talked about Characters and how authors make them memorable. We read several short stories and had several great discussions.

In Science we continued our investigation of The Scientific Process and determined how many drops of water can stay on the surface of a nickel without flowing over. Ask your child about our surprising results!

In Writing we tried out our first technology project where we mixed the Writing Process with a google AP. Students brainstormed, drafted, revised, and edited a simple sentence. Then through the power of technology they were able to watch the process in action. Click on a link below to take a look at the fabulous sentences the students created!

Our first Full week of school!

Hi Folks!

We have made it through our first full week of school and I am excited for our upcoming week! It was nice to settle into our schedule and start introducing 5th grade Content. It takes about 6 weeks to fully acclimate to our new room and delve into the content, but those first several weeks are so important in establishing a safe learning environment. Here is some of the content that we began this week:

In Science we started talking about the Scientific Process. Be sure to ask your child how they used this process to "Save Fred". This week we will continue to explore this process as well as starting our first unit on Ecosystems.

In Social Studies we began introducing basic geography and map skills. We learned how grids can be utilized to help name specific locations. This week we will begin our first unit on the Maya, Inca and Aztecs. Your child may or may not have told you that this year I will be teaching both Science and Social Studies. I am excited about the opportunity to integrate both of these subjects across the curriculum.

In Reading we introduced our first vocabulary unit and the students had their first week of homework. We will continue to learn the vocabulary routines this week and will introduce spelling in the next couple weeks. This week was also your child's first reading log assignment. I hope that this online reading log will reduce the stress of a daily log and help build responsibility and independence in your child.

In Writing we are exploring the writing process. Over the coming weeks we will review and enhance our knowledge of the Personal Narrative.

In Math we have settled into our new "switching" model. Students are loving the opportunity to move to a new classroom and work with different students, as well as a new teacher. This process is a great step towards preparing your child for the Middle School model.

Over the next couple weeks I will be updating you more specifically on how your child is doing in the classroom. If you have any questions before you hear from me please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

I look forward to seeing you all on September 28th at Curriculum night.

Our First Week...

We had a great first week of school getting to know the members of Team 105!

The last year of Elementary school can be very exciting and it certainly goes by very fast. We will try to make the most of each day in Team 105. We spent this week getting to know ourselves and each other as individuals. It is important to recognize each other's unique abilities before we can start building a team. Next week we will begin to focus on how to communicate with each other respectfully and thus build an effective team.

If your child, like many typical fifth graders, could only seem to remember how to use one word answers to tell you about their first week :) Try out these conversation starters:

1. Why did you play with toilet paper this week?
2. What is human bingo... it sounds painful?
3. What's a selfie?
4. Tell me about your "puzzle"? Did you bring it home?
5. Who is Mr. Terupt?
6. What is your goal for the school year?
7. Why is your class the best "Hands Down"?

Hopefully those questions will elicit some more in depth responses. We really had a great first week and I am excited to spend the year with your children! Thank you to all of the parents and children who have filled out my online survey. It is very valuable information that I refer back to often during the first few weeks. If you and your child have not gotten a chance to fill it out there is still time. Please take a moment to click on the links on the sidebar and fill out the questionnaire.

Thank you and feel free to email me with any questions or concerns.
